Bosnia 2014 (Summer)
We had 4 days in Bosnia, or more correctly Bosnia and Herzegovina. We based ourselves in the very interesting town of Mostar. Mostar is famous for Stari Most (literally 'Old Bridge'). It was built in the 16th-century by the Ottomans and stood for 427 years, until it was destroyed in 1993 by Croat paramilitary forces during the Bosnian War. It was subsequently rebuilt in 2004. Mostar is a divided town - Bosnian Croatians live on the western side of the Neretva River, and Bosniaks reside on the eastern side.
We spent a full day visiting the capital Sarajevo. In the old town, there's a great bazaar called Baščaršija. It is Sarajevo's historical and cultural center. Being 2014, it was a poignant moment when we stood on the same corner as Gavrilo Princip did 100 years before and pulled the trigger that started WWI. In a local museum, we saw the actual handgun that ignited the catastrophe.
