Malta is situated smack bang in the middle of the Mediterranean between Sicily and North Africa.  It's had a succession of rulers including the Romans, Moors, Knights of Saint John, French, and British. It has megalithic temples dating back 6,000 years.  We spent the first week on Gozo island in the small town Xaghra.  Each day, we had great fun exploring the rugged island.  We fell in love with a small bay called Mġarr ix-Xini – it, undisputedly, has the world’s best calamari.

We then spent 3 nights at the Mdina fortress on main island of Malta.  Our accommodation was inside the fortress where 300 people still live.  It was the Maltese capital from antiquity to the medieval period.  Also spent a wonderful day exploring Valletta - the current capital.
