Kenya 2012 (Summer)

Even after all these years, the kids still vote Kenya as one of their favourite trips.  Our first night was spent in the expat district of Nairobi with our friend Louisa who, at the time, was living/working here for the  Australian High Commission overseeing important development work.  We then made our way into the vast Maasai Mara Reserve.  It's famous for its large populations of lion, African leopard, cheetah and African bush elephant. The Mara also hosts the Great Migration where millions of wildebeest continually migrate in a large circle (clockwise) from the Serengeti then north through the Mara.  This is also the land of the brave Maasai warriors - who's rite of passage to manhood, until recently, was to kill a lion singlehandedly... with a sharp stick!  We spent a day in a Maasia village and felt very welcome.  The routine, in all the parks we visited, went like this - wake-up just before dawn and head out in the open-topped 4x4 to spot wildlife; return to camp and enjoy all you can eat breakfast and lunch; laze around the resort during the day; then late afternoon jump back in the van and shoot (with camera) more wildlife; return to camp just after dusk for beers and dinner.

Next we had a few days in the Lake Nakuru National Park where, among many other animals, we spotted the endangered White Rhino.  We then headed to the amazing Amboseli National Park.  Amboseli is described as one of the best wildlife-viewing experiences in the world and is famous for the impressive backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro.
